Yoga is essentially a spiritual discipline based on an extremely subtle science, which focuses on bringing harmony between mind and body. It is an art and science of healthy living.
The Recreation Department currently offers two yoga classes based on your experience and comfort level:
Basic Intro to Yoga: in this class, participants will learn the different core elements of yoga, including terminology and poses. Basic Yoga is a combination of Yin and Restorative Yoga which is gentle, slow-paced and passive involving longer pose holds and deep breathing. Basic Yoga will incorporate a still style with restful poses. Most postures will be seated and supine. You do no need an experience to register for this class, however, you are welcome to be part of this class even if you've practiced yoga in past. This class should build your confidence and give you an introductory understanding of yoga that would be helpful in future classes. Meets once weekly. PLEASE BRING A MAT AND WATER BOTTLE. You may also bring blocks and straps if you have them.
Beginner/Intermediate Yoga: this class is a combination of levels and experiences. Participants are usually familiar with the concepts of yoga and poses can be modified for the more experienced and confident person. Beginning/Intermediate Yoga will be Hatha Yoga encompassing traditional yoga styles with emphasis on beginning and intermediate pose levels. Hatha Yoga is a fundamental system that focuses on pairing poses with breathing techniques. However, some Hatha Yoga poses focus on flowing the breath in static/still postures when holding the pose longer. These postures will be standing, bending, squatting, balancing, seated, supine, and prone. This class will move at a slightly faster pace than the Basic Intro to Yoga class because most people are familiar with the poses. Meets twice weekly. PLEASE BRING A MAT AND WATER BOTTLE. You may also bring blocks and straps if you have them.
Intermediate/Advanced Yoga: TBA
**Basic/Beginner Yoga: this class is a multi-level combination of our basic instruction and beginner instruction, specifically offered for participants on the waiting list of the Basic Intro to Yoga and the Beginner/Intermediate class. Additional participants may be able to register for remaining spots.
Classes will be held in Room 201 of the Wilson Center. Enter through Door 3 and take the stairs to the second floor. The classroom is at the far west-end of the hallway next to the Public Playroom and Birthday Party Room. Elevator access is available near Door 5.
